NOAH 1.0 docsIntroNOAH (Notes Overview Alpha Hack) displays an overview of the notes in your notepad, alphabetized by title or text. I wrote it to help me find notes (such as the one that contains my list of books to get) which are hard to find in the overview. You should be aware that NOAH is a hack and will likely break under future OS revisions if not sooner.NOAH works only under Newton OS 2.0.-------------------------------------------------------------ContentsIntroductionContentsLegal stuffUsing NOAHSupportKnown problems and limitationsPlans for the futureRevision history of the programRevision history of the docsAcknowledgments-------------------------------------------------------------Legal stuffNOAH (the software that this documentation describes) and this documentation are all Copyright 1994-1996 Matthew Dixon Cowles and his licensors. Use Newton Backup Utility or any of the other programs that will send packages to your Newton. (Check the documentation that came with the program you use for details.) Once you have installed the app, you will see a new icon, a calendar, in your extras drawer. Tap it to open NOAH.-- UseUsing NOAH is extrmely simple since there's not much you can do. When it opens, NOAH displays an overview of the notes in your notepad, showing their first few words and creation dates. If there's more than will fit on the screen, you can scroll using Newt's scroll arrows to see the remainder. If a note has a title, it will be alphabetized by the title. If it doesn't have a title, it will be alphabetized by the first words in the note or the first words in the first item of the list.Items with ink text get alphabetized first since NOAH doesn't know what the words mean. Items that begin with non-alphabetic characters get alphabetized next and the alphabet follows.NOAH ignores empty notes and it summarizes any notes that contain only sketches into one line that just lists the number of sketches that it sees in the notepad. It's possible for developers to add functionality to Newton's notepad by adding to the "stationery" types that appear in the notepad's New button. NOAH doesn't try to figure out the contents of any stationery types other than the built-in note and lists; it just displays "(unrecognized type)".The alphabet tabs at the top of the screen should be self-explanatory, except that the A tab scrolls NOAH to the beginning of its display, which is actually the ink-text section, not the items that begin with A.NOAH displays all notes by default. Tap the folder icon in the lower right of the screen to restrict the display to only notes that have been filed in certain folders. NOAH may not show all of your folders in the pop-up; it only lists folders that actually have notes in them.Tapping on a line in NOAH's overview will close NOAH and take you to that note. Of course that doesn't work in the case of the line that summarizes sketches and in the case of notes in formats that NOAH doesn't understand.-- Deleting NOAHJust scrub it in the Extras drawer. NOAH doesn't store any data of its own in Newt so there isn't any to hunt down and delete.-------------------------------------------------------------SupportI am always interested in getting feedback from users. I would be delighted to hear comments, thoughts and suggestions about the documentation, feature requests, bug reports, expressions of praise, funny stories, and lucrative job offers. If you are reporting a bug, please try to be as specific as possible about the actions that lead up to it. If you are expressing praise or making a job offer, please try to be as generous as possible. I can't promise to implement all features that are requested, but I will keep track of them and will be more likely to implement those that are requested most often. Many of the best features in my apps have been suggested by users.Support for NOAH is only available by mail, preferably e-mail. It relies on about 72 zillion undocumented aspects of Newt's notepad. It's ever so likely to break under future system revisions if not before. In order to get reasonable sorting performance, NOAH must get all the sorting information into Newton's NewtonScript heap at once. That means that if you have a lot of notes in relation to the amount of heap space free, your Newton will probably run out of heap space when NOAH opens. There's just not much I can do about that.-------------------------------------------------------------Revision history of the programApril 12, 1996 Version 1.0.-------------------------------------------------------------Revision history of documentationApril 13, 1996 Version 1.0 docs.-------------------------------------------------------------AcknowledgmentsMy thanks go to:The kind and patient folks at Newton DTS and to Rick Giles for testing and good advice.
