VoiceToy Text to Speech sample code for Developer Underground (Part 1)I was thrilled to see Will Nelson's article on the Text to Speech (TTS) extension for the Newton. Based on that excellent article, I've put together a sample Newton application which runs on either an eMate 300 or a MessagePad 2000. By doing some detective work, I've been able to uncover some additional speech parameters and a 9th voice. VoiceToy lets you play with the pitch, rate, and voice used by Macintalk. Three new parameters are used in the application: pmod, char, and nmbr. These parameters control whether or not inflection is used when speaking (monotone or not), letter by letter speech (instead of word by word), and numeral by numeral speech (numbers are spoken digit by digit). In a follow up article, I'll present some other Macintalk control parameters with an expanded version of VoiceToy which "sings" and lets you apply voice patterns and voice styles to the spoken text. I'd like to give Will a big "thank you" for providing the first sample of programming the TTS extension. And now, here's VoiceToy...Lee MoonLeeMoon@aol.comhttp://members.aol.com/LeeMoon/
