01/13/02 Newton Movie Converter is designed to produce movies in the format designed by Lee Moon and Brad Tober. The following are the instructions for running the program: 1. Install NTK if you do not already have it. See below. 2. Launch Newton Movie Converter by double-clicking it, or by dropping a QuickTime movie on the icon. 3. Select your QuickTime movie if prompted. 4. Select image size, frame rate and audio encoding. Press Save. 5. Choose output folder when prompted. DO NOT save to your Movie Converter folder! 6. Program will run a long time, and show the number of seconds converted as a progress indicator. Then NTK will launch. 7. Change the movie name and options as desired, then use CMD-1/CMD-2 in NTK to build and install the package. Use Balloon Help for more info. You might need to increase memory allocation for Movie Converter and/or NTK. For a 1.8MB movie, I set the NTK memory to 24MB, with 8MB of main heap and 4MB of build heap. If you run out of memory when launching NTK, try exiting Movie Converter and then launching NTK by double clicking the project file. Downloading NTK I am using the complete development archive from UNNA (32MB): http://www.unna.org/unna/development/NewtonDev/NewtonDev.sit You might be able to use just the NTK part: http://www.unna.org/unna/apple/development/NTK/macntk/NTKMac164b3.sit.hqx but I am not sure that it is complete. In either case, make sure to adjust your memory settings for NTK in the Finder and in the NTK Prefs. Minimum System Requirements: Newton: NOS 2.1 only (MP2k or eMate) Mac: You need a Mac that can run NTK. One user got Newton Movie Converter to run on a PowerMac 6100 with OS 8.1, 40MB RAM, 61MB virtual by setting the minimum memory size to 49800K. Troubleshooting Try converting a smaller movie; you will need a lot of space on the Newt, because the Newt apparently compresses the movie *after* it is uploaded. As far as the memory requirements on the Mac, you might try reducing the memory settings for Movie Converter Known Issues 1. Some people have been experiencing problems while building the project under NTK. I will post a fix as soon as the problem is resolved. 2. Some movies seem to advance at a slower rate than their frame rate would indicate. This results is very long conversion times and huge output files. If this happens, increase your division factor.
