Attaxx for Newton OS 2.xVersion 1.0 - FreewareWritten by Michael PeayThank you for taking the time to download my first endeavor in Newton OS programming. Attaxx is a simple strategy board game in the same vein as Othello or gomoku.Features ¥ One or two players ¥ Three different board sizes (6x6, 7x7, or 8x8) ¥ Randomly selected playing fields varies game play ¥ Small size (19k installed with sound effects) ¥ Freeware! This is the main display of Attaxx:ÊÊThe status display at the top shows the number of pieces each side has and the arrow in the middle points to the player whose turn it is to play. What's The Object? The goal of the game is to finish with more pieces than the opponent when all the spaces are filled. How Do I Play? The game is played by moving your pieces into empty squares and capturing adjacent opponents to that position.A piece may move either one or two spaces away from its current position. If a piece is moved only one space away (as shown in the figure below by the grayed out pieces), the piece will be duplicated at the destination (i.e. the piece will remain where it was an a new piece will be placed at the destination.ÊIf a piece is moved two spaces away (as show in the figure below by the grayed out pieces), the piece will be moved to the destination and the starting place will become empty.ÊAfter a move is made, any opponent pieces located adjacent (one space away) from the destination will be converted to your color. If none of your pieces are able to move or jump, your turn will end.Play continues until all empty spaces are filled. How Do I Move?Movement is easy and very Newton-like. Tap on the piece you wish to move to select it (identified by a heavy border on the space) and the tap on the destination. Only legal moves will be accepted. If you wish to cancel a move in progress to select a different piece, simply tap on the piece to be deselected.Attaxx currently does not support Undo so plan your moves wisely. The goal of the game is to finish with more pieces than the opponent when all the spaces are filled.Produced By Gryphon Software?Yes that's right and it is the same Gryphon Software that produced Morph, Gryphon Bricks, The Adventures of Batman & Robin Activity Center, etc.It is copyright by Gryphon Software due to the fact that I developed it on company time while I'm learning Newton OS development. It is unsupported by Gryphon Software. Instead, contact me (mpeay@gryphonsw.com) if you have any comments, questions or problems. What's In The Next Version?I'm currently not planning on a future version since my time is limited and I'd rather work on new things, but if there is enough interest here's the list of things I've thought about adding: ¥ Undo ¥ Grayscale support for Newton OS 2.1 ¥ Keep track of Win/Loss/Tie historyHow Much Does It Cost?Nothing. Since it's a small program that would make no difference to Gryphon Software revenues it's a freebie. I only ask that you drop me a note (mpeay@gryphonsw.com) to say how much you like it. If you hate it, please be gentle as I have a fragile ego. ;-)Copyright © 1997, Gryphon Software Corp.Personal:mbpeay@ix.netcom.comhttp://www.netcom.com/~mbpeay/Professional:mpeay@gryphonsw.comhttp://www.gryphonsw.com/~mpeay/13-AUG-97
